Alumni, junior sailors come together for Sea Shell regattas

On July 2nd, the Santa Barbara Sea Shell Association held the current member junior Zimmerman Cup regatta, and the first annual Semana Nautica Alumni Regatta.  Sia McAvoyand Savannah Zollett both scored first in each of the Sabot and O’Pen Skiff divisions, respectively.  Over three races, in moderate breeze, each sailor earned three first places.

The day also marked the inaugural Semana Nautica Alumni Regatta.

All former Sea Shell junior sailors or parents of former junior sailors were invited back to the beach to compete across two races.  Eleven participants sailed in the US Sabots of current members to compete in one double windward leeward race, and a second race out to the half-mile bell buoy.  Moderate breeze had our skippers hiking out in these little boats, and focusing on tactics to eke out every advantage.

Jim Muir and Jason MacMurray traded first and second across the two races, with Jason earning first overall with his lower combined total time.  Paul Castleberg finished third in the series.  Thank you to all who participated.  We will definitely be holding this event again!
