2010 Presidio Sports Beach Soccer Summer Slam

A special congratulation to Team Foxy for winning the $500 cash prize at the 2010 Beach Soccer Summer Slam

There were discussions over food and drink at Union Ale on Saturday night about how to bring permanent soccer courts to the sand of West Beach.

That’s how much fun the first-ever Beach Soccer Summer Slam was.

“Team Foxy,” which was made up of a talented group of former high school and college players, was awarded its cash prize at the after-party for winning the Open Division with a hard-fought 7-3 victory over “Crab People” in the championship match. The squad featured local talent such as former San Marcos High standout and UCSB Gaucho James Kiffe along with Micah Ohlen, who played for SBCC before moving on to Point Loma Nazarene.

“I’m so glad we were able to put a team together and get out there,” said team captain Graham Fox. “The level of play was super high, and it got pretty serious. Everyone was smiling at the end, and it was just a bunch of fun.”

The tournament, hosted by PresidioSports.com as part of Semana Nautica, featured a level of competitiveness and intensity that exceeded expectations. Some of the best young prep soccer talent in the nation going at it in the High School Boys Division, as Santa Barbara High Gold, made up of a collection of the Dons’ CIF Champion players, defeated Carpinteria High players for the division title.

The Santa Barbara Soccer Club Girls U-15 team, dubbed “Kick-Butt Chicks,” battled hard against older players in the Co-Ed Division but eventually fell to “Team Beachrat” in the championship match.

The tournament’s success assures that it will return for another year and continue to grow. Special thanks go to Dr. Mark Brisby of The Training Room for his help as the tournament’s trainer, as well as Santa Barbara Bank and Trust for their generous help.
