While the 2019 Semana Nautica Summer Sports Festival has come to an end, the performances and memories will endure. Thanks to all who were a part of Santa Barbara’s 83rd summer sports festival, from participants to sponsors, from event directors and volunteers to spectators.
Before we start preparing for 2020, here’s a look back at some of the great moments from ’19. Links are included to more in-depth news coverage by Noozhawk sports editor Barry Punzal and his team.
MULLEN & HENZELL 1-MILE SWIM
Casey Powers, Taylor Steffen, John Bish, Arjun McAvoy and Dani Castleberg were the fastest swimmers in the 1-mile sprint. Powers and Castleberg are first-time winners of the event, with Powers’ overall winning time coming in at 21 minutes, 59 seconds.

MULLEN & HENZELL 3-MILE SWIM
Los Angeles-based training partners Alex Kostich and Mallory Mead claimed victories at East Beach on the first Sunday of the festival. Benjamin Duenas and Stephen Hunt came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively, followed by Mead in 4th overall. Mead becomes a back-to-back champion in the 3-Mile race.

4TH OF JULY 15K & 5K
The 65th running of the 4th of July 15K saw Addi Zerrenner and Jeffrey Stern successfully outpace the competition on the hilly, cross-country course at Elings Park. Stern finished with a time of 59 minutes and 17 seconds. Jake Ballantine was the fastest on the 5K course, winning by more than a minute with a time of 20:18.

CBVA SANTA BARBARA OPEN
Abby Van Winkle and Savvy Simo – teammates from the national champion UCLA Bruins team – captured the CBVA Santa Barbara Open by defeating Zana Muno and Chrissy Jones in the finals 21-16, 17-21, 17-15.
In the Men’s Championship match, John Schwengel and Cole Fiers bested David Vande Meer and Cody Caldwell 21-16, 21-19.
SEMANA NAUTICA 5-MILE BIATHLON
Jon Clark returned after an eight-year hiatus to win the 4-mile beach run and 1-mile ocean swim. Clark has won the event more than 10 times in his lifetime.

SEMANA NAUTICA 6-MILE SWIM
Taylor Steffen was victorious in his first 6-mile race while Karen Schultz won the women’s race for the third time. Steffen’s winning time of two hours, 12 minutes and 37 seconds. Swimmers started at Goleta Beach and finished to the south at Hendry’s Beach.

SANTA BARBARA TENNIS OPEN
Victor Krustev topped Miles Seemann in the men’s open championship match 6-1, 6-4 to become the back-to-back SB Open winner. Krustev, who plays for the UCSB Gauchos team, bested a 32-entry bracket. Krustev and Seemann teamed in the doubles draw and won the title as the top seed over Graham Maassen and Jackson Powell.
AGE-GROUP SWIM MEET
Santa Barbara Swim Club hosted various swim clubs from around Southern California for the long-running meet at Los Baños del Mar Pool.
